The Fort National

All tours of the Fort are commented by an experienced guide who will greet you at the top of the drawbridge.

They last about 35 minutes. Accessible by foot at low tide, the Fort National invites you to cross its drawbridge across the centuries.

The visit of the bastion, whose granite walls are part of the rock, will bring you back to life more than three centuries of the military life of the Fort : from the imposing tank to the ammunition dungeon, legendary maritime attacks to the epic duels of the privateer Robert Surcouf, memories of Chateaubriand during the tragic hours of the Second World War. The text of the visit is made available to foreign visitors in the following languages : English, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish.

Opening days and times

The Fort National is open during school holidays (Easter and All Saints Day), longs weekends (Labour Day, 8th of May, Ascension, Whit Sunday) and everyday from the 1st of June and the 30th of September (look upon the timetable). The Fort opening times depend on the tides and change each day.

You can access it at low tide from the Saint-Vincent's dock at the bottom of the Castle of St Malo. The French flag is hoisted at the top of the mast which dominates the Fort to indicate that the Fort is open.

When the French flag is hoisted, you can visit the Fort.

You can access to it at low tide from the beach called l'Eventail, in front of the Castle.

You will cross the beach from the Porte Saint-Thomas or the car park la Galère (300 meters by foot). The tickets are sold at the gate of the Fort.

An adventure guide book for kids is available for free. They will be able to visit the Fort National and ask questions to the guide.
